Shearer vs Switzerland

England 1-1 Switzerland (Euro 96 group A, 8 Jun 96) The first game of the 1996 European Championship saw hosts England take on the Swiss at Wembley. England had prepared for the tournament by playing a series of friendlies during the previous couple of years. Whilst he was scoring for fun at club level for Blackburn, striker Alan Shearer had suffered a baron spell at International level failing to score for several games. Manager Terry Venables stuck by him though and made him first choice striker for Euro 96. Shearer would end up as the tournament's top scorer. The game ended 1-1, here is Shearer's 23rd minute opener.
