Soccerclips' Goals of the Week 11

Added: 03.11.2008 03:29

Welcome to another edition of the column that proves time and time again that the only certainties in life are death, taxes and the right to witness the very best of what the great game of football has to offer. On that note, let's see the latest line of Soccerclips' Goals of the Week!

10. Karim Benzema, Lyon (view goal here)
Sochaux pays dearly for their defensive lapse as Benzema scores a top-notch goal to put Lyon in the lead. The ball is handled poorly by a Sochaux defender, and the young Frenchman makes like a predator by swooping in; he proceeds to scamper toward the goal before lashing a rising shot into the top right corner.

9. Benjamin Nivet, Caen (view goal here)
We stay in France, as the unfancied Caen side is rewarded for their pretty football with an equally beautiful goal. A no-look back heel pass is threaded straight to Nivet, who takes a few touches and evades a defender before rifling a mystifying shot that leaves the keeper no time to react as it hits the net.

8. Shaun Maloney, Celtic (view goal here)
Maloney extends his hot form since his return to Celtic with a voluptuous volley. The keeper reacts to an oncoming free kick and punches it out of the area; however, Maloney is in the path of the clearance, and produces a crisp crack at the goal with his right foot, which curls past everyone and into the goal.

Maloney: The Bhoy Wonder

7. Xavi, Barcelona (view goal here)
The Cules' star midfielder conjures up another textbook set-piece strike against Malaga. His effort from just outside the box hops right over the wall, takes a sudden downward trajectory, and spirals ever so slightly away from the goalie on its way to giving Barca an early lead away.

6. Shunsuke Nakamura, Celtic (view goal here)
The Japanese sensation gives Man United a possible preview of things to come in the midweek with a trademark free kick. Working from nearly the same spot where he won the League for Celtic in April of last year, Nakamura lofts his free kick high and to the left, beating the Kilmarnock keeper and giving Celtic a two-goal cushion.

5. Alessandro Del Piero, Juventus (view goal here)
It is yet another set-piece special from the man who has made it a staple of his legendary career with Juve. Just when it appeared his free kick from the left side of the pitch was going to fly just over the bar, it takes a slight dip toward the top left corner; the Roma goalkeeper can do nothing to prevent the ball from going past him.

Del Piero: Another work of art

4. Frank Lampard, Chelsea (view goal here)
The Chelsea midfielder scores a glorious opening goal against the surprising Hull side. A through ball attempt is cleared out by a Hull defender, but it goes straight to Lampard, who almost nonchalantly puts a boot on the ball; the resulting chip shot hangs in the air for what seems like an eternity before landing in the Tigers' net.

3. Rémi Maréval, Nantes (view goal here)
The Nantes defender produces an absolutely astonishing left-footed strike that Roberto Carlos would certainly look at with appreciation. A corner kick is headed out into the open by a defender, and Maréval pounces on the loose ball, one-timing a blistering shot from well over 30 yards past everyone into the top corner.

2. Diego, Werder Bremen (view goal here)
Another day, another apperance on the column for this fantastic playmaker from Brazil; and he is fully deserving of it as well, after his latest cracker. He takes a lofted pass off of his chest, turns, and produces a corkscrew, looping toe poke with his left foot; the keeper is left in a state of shock as the ball floats into the net.

1. David Bentley, Tottenham Hotspur (view goal here)
The latest edition of the North London derby was a pulsating one to say the least, with these hated rivals playing to a 4-4 draw. As the wise men say, it always has to start with one; and David Bentley's incredulous strike of the ball was a sign of things to come. After about a twelve second period of both teams knocking the ball about in midfield, it falls right on Bentley's laps about 40 yards out; spotting Almunia off his line, he proceeds to knock a perfectly weighted volley all the way into the Arsenal goal. As Andy Gray says, "take a bow, son."

Bentley: A dashing derby opener
